Back in March, when I started experimenting with film simulations for my Nikon Zf, I was excited by the different looks I could capture on the spot, in camera. I’ve continued to dabble and chose the Astia profile on a recent trip to the coast. I thought you might enjoy seeing comparisons of film-simulated Jpegs and normal-processed RAWs.
Nikon includes a variety of Picture Controls in the camera that are worth experimenting with. All you have to do is choose the look you want via the settings menu. There are also open slots for additional profiles - all of which I’ve filled up. One of my favorites is Astia that I downloaded from the Nikon Picture Control Editor site.
The Astia simulation cools off the reds, reduces saturation, tempers contrast, and adds a hint of Fuji-like green. Take a look at the differences compared to the standard Nikon look.
All of the images were captured in RAW+Jpeg, providing me with a full complement of options during post-processing. On this particular day, I did prefer the film simulations. To my eye, they have a bit more style and don’t look like regular digital photos. Others might prefer the Nikon Pro Standard look.
Regardless of your preference, it’s fun to compare. And I love having so many in-camera options to choose from in the field.
You can read more about film simulations for Nikon, Fujifilm, and others by checking out my article, Peering Through the Looking Glass of Film Simulations.
Derrick, a friend of mine owns Very Good Presets. I would highly recommend them. Not because he's a friend, but because they are amazing. He works on making those simulations reflect the look you might get from various film simulations. You might want to check them out.
Great topic and great comparison examples. While I like the Nikon Pro versions viewed on my iMac24 screen, it's fantastic to have these options. Also a great time to receive your post - inspiration for some photography this weekend! Thanks Derrick!
