Last week I wrote about the gathering of VW Microbuses in Huntington Beach, CA, and that I was going to cover it with my Fujifilm GFX 100S. In short, it was a blast.
More than 240 VW owners registered and showed up, parking their vintage vehicles side by side along the beach boardwalk. Some arrived the day before an camped overnight. Others rolled in during the early morning to claim their free coffee and doughnut. I rode in at 6:30 am with my sister and brother-in-law in their 1965 red and white bus that they’ve been restoring for years.
It was a wonderland for bus enthusiasts. Let’s take a look at some of the other participants.
Once everyone had a chance to view the show and visit with the enthusiasts, VW fired up the action on the stage for the reveal of the North America ID.Buzz, three row EV bus. The event was live streamed. And it was pretty exciting.
This was our opportunity to get up close and personal with the new all-electric version of this VW classic. There was music, interviews, give-aways, and awards for the best in show microbuses, It was quite an event.
I enjoyed covering all the action with the Fujifilm GFX 100S, and the pictures look terrific. A great day at the beach with folks who are passionate about their chosen mode of transportation.
If you want to hear more about all of this, including the technical bits of covering the show with a medium format camera, tune in to this week’s podcast titled, The Roving Medium Format Photographer.
Surfs up!
Great photos and fun cars. The Hippies use back door showed a good sense of humor.
How common were the opening front windows in the original microbusses?
Looks like a lot of fun! I miss my bus....
